Plateau Bath

Enjoying retreat and the ritual of self care

Montréal, QC
2025

The intent behind this small-scale renovation was to preserve the 100-year-old-building’s heritage warmth and charm while integrating modern aesthetics and functionality. Timeless design often draws from nature, with forms and textures that reference its quiet knowing. It felt intuitive to pare back to ceramic, lime plaster, glass, and metal.

The brick-red mosaic adds depth and complexity, its warmth offset by the cool touch of brushed nickel tapware. The space envelops and soothes, retaining a touch of drama and masculine intrigue.

Schematic reflections

Two concept directions were provided for this project, a 60 square foot bathroom renovation in Montréal’s Plateau neighbourhood – one moody & dramatic, and another airy & bright (the client preferred the former, shown). In these early stages, we knew we wanted to pursue a bit of drama, a bit of contrast with indirect lighting, and a bit of texture.

Often when we put together mood boards, we try to pull images from nature. We do this to give you an idea of the emotional quality of the space, leaving room for concrete solutions further along in the process.

The full review

After an unexpected problem with my bathroom that required a complete remodel on short notice, I reached out to Cave Studio for design services. Despite the short notice as well as the complex and unusual layout of my bathroom, Erin delivered a design that was visually stunning and very functional while preserving the charm of my 140 year old building in Montreal.

After the initial design phase, Erin managed the project with my contractor to ensure that the design was well executed. When issues arose as they often do in complicated projects like this, Erin always quickly resolved them with solutions that fit the design aesthetic while minimizing delays. I was able to confidently leave the city for an extended period and let Erin handle all of the design and architectural decisions for my bathroom. She worked very effectively with my contractor to deliver a renovation that closely matched the original renderings and improve the functionality and look of the space. As a result, I have a beautiful new bathroom that I love.
